Kings Dethroned : A History of the Evolution of Astronomy from the Time of the Roman Empire Up to the Present Day; Showing It to Be an Amazing Series of Blunders Founded Upon an Error in the Second Century B. C. (9781789870367)

Gerrard Hickson proposes here a series of alternative theories of astronomy, the place of the Earth and Sun in the universe, and the mathematics of the cosmos.

After a revelatory experience, Gerrard Hickson began to dispute the distances involved between the Earth and the Sun. This book broadens and expands its scope, questioning the validity of underlying assumptions in astronomical science. Using the work of the ancient Greek and Roman scientists as a starting point, Hickson takes us forward through millennia of developments, asserting throughout that the basis of established science is unsound and thus in need of substantial overhaul.

The later chapters of this book are occupied with refuting the theories propagated by the physicist Albert Einstein. Conceding that the notion of relativity is clever, Hickson nevertheless posits that it is based on unsound assumptions and is thus invalid. For the author, relativity is - alongside Newtonian physics and earlier theories of antiquity - a further step toward the wrongness that defines conventional astronomy.

Although his ideas gained some notice for their novelty, the alternative hypotheses of astronomy posited by Hickson have been discredited. Successful use of conventional astronomic calculations in fields such as avionics, rocketry, space exploration, and communication satellites have affirmed that established mathematics and distances agreed on by science are sound. However, Hickson's theories remain a curiosity - it is to sate this that this book is reprinted, complete with the author's own illustrated diagrams.

The Priority of Christ : Toward a Postliberal Catholicism (9780801098208)

A Major Statement on Christology from Bishop Robert Barron For a long time, Christians have tried to bridge the divide between Christianity and secular liberalism with philosophy and theology. Bishop Robert Barron shows that the answer to this debate--and the way to move forward--lies in Jesus. Barron transcends the usual liberal/conservative or Protestant/Catholic divides with a postliberal Catholicism that brings the focus back on Jesus as revealed in the New Testament narratives. Barron's classical Catholic postliberalism will be of interest to a broad audience including not only the academic community but also preachers and general readers interested in entering the dialogue between Catholicism and postliberalism. The hardcover edition includes a new preface by the author. Praise for The Priority of Christ "Barron's wonderful book The Priority of Christ brings postliberalism back to its Catholic home. . . . A downright lovely book, written with a kind of winsome liter...

Quantum Future : From Volta and Como to Present and Beyond. Proceedings of Xth Max Born Symposium Held in Przesieka, Poland, 24-27 September 1997 (9783540652182)

This volume presents detailed discussions of a number of unsolved conceptual and technical issues arising, in particular, in the foundations of quantum theory and the philosophy of science. The 14 contributions capture a wide variety of viewpoints and backgrounds. Some chapters deal primarily with the main experimental issues; others focus on theoretical and philosophical questions. In addition, attempts are made to systematically analyze ways in which quantum physics can be connected to the neurosciences and consciousness research. The Academic Gateway : Understanding the Journey to Tenure (9780776624372)

The Academic Gateway: Understanding the Journey to Tenure investigates the experiences of professors employed in tenure-track positions who are starting their career within a university environment, but have not yet attained the affirmation and permanence that tenure offers. The role that they have taken on entails the preparation of students within a professional school. Some of them have very limited professional experience, while others bring multiple years of experience with them in their transition to a faculty of education. The contributors speak to the three key components of their faculty role: teaching, service, and research. Addressing organizational structures and differences relative to prior roles, they examine how these changes have assisted, confused or altered the way they conduct their day-to-day work. They speak about relevant prior experiences, the preparation they received through graduate school, and the details of the learning curve as they entered into their tenu...
