En el Japón del siglo XVIII, Tsunetomo Yamamoto, un poderoso samurái, creó el Hagakure, un documento que recogía sus pensamientos acerca de los valores y conducta de los samuráis. Durante los siguientes 200 años, el Hagakure circuló secretamente entre los samuráis "despiertos", una elite samurái. El libro estuvo disponible por primera vez para el público japonés en 1906, y hasta 1945, sus principios influyeron enormemente en la clase dirigente japonesa, en particular a los que detentaban el poder militar.
