Taidehistoria tuntee vain harvoja yhtä arvokkaita töitä kuin Meripihkahuone. Se tunnettiin kautta Euroopan kuuluisana "maailman kahdeksantena ihmeenä". Vuonna 1717 Preussin kuningas Fredrik I lähetti sen suuret ja taidokkaasti muotoillut meripihkapaneelit lahjana Venäjän tsaarille Pietari Suurelle ja siitä tuli pian Venäjän keisarikunnan mahdin symboli.

Huone säilyi yli kahdensadan vuoden ajan Katariinan palatsissa Venäjällä, mutta toisen maailmansodan puhjetessa Hitler halusi sen Kolmannen valtakunnan aarteiden joukkoon. Kun natsit vyöryivät Leningradiin, se revittiin irti seinistä ja pakattiin laatikoihin, mutta sitten se katosi eikä sitä löydetty enää koskaan.
