En el Japón tradicional, el arte de la guerra y las relaciones sociales estaban regidos oficialmente por el bushidô, el código de honor de los samuráis. Pero el bushidô tenía un lado más secreto: el arte del ninjutsu. Los ninja eran expertos en espionaje y contraespionaje, con valores y tradiciones que los distinguían de los simples delincuentes. Su arte, tanto invisible como indispensable, se transmitía en el seno de escuelas secretas y se basaba en manuales escritos en un lenguaje codificado.
El Bansenshukai ("Tratado de los diez mil ríos"), redactado por el maestro ninja FujibayashiYasukate en 1676, es la recopilación más extensa y venerada de todas. Guardado en secreto hasta el siglo xx, trata de ética, filosofía, estrategia militar, astrología o fabricación de armas según la tradición de los ninja. Ofrecemos aquí sus cuadernos preliminares (la porción esencial del texto, sobre los principios éticos y espirituales del ninjutsu), completados por otro gran clásico de la literatura ninja antigua: los Cien poemas ninja de Yoshimori. Junto al Shoninki, publicado en esta misma colección y presentado por Axel Mazuer, el lector en lengua castellana tiene por fin a su disposición los textos fundamentales de la ética y forma de vida ninja.
